TODAY I LIKE ··· THANKSGIVING IN VERMONT

En noviembre de 2006 estaba  estudiando en Boston y con mis amigos planeábamos dónde celebrar Acción de Gracias. Nos apetecía algo típico americano, poder disfrutar de la comida y el ambiente que habíamos visto en tantas películas, y casi por casualidad dimos con la opción perfecta: un hotel rural delante de un lago en el estado de Vermont. Es uno de los sitios más bonitos en los que he estado nunca: en la region de las islas del Lago Champlain, una zona rural salpicada de granjas, casas de madera blanca, embarcaderos, pueblecitos,... Alquilamos un par de coches y a la carretera. 

El Bed&Breakfast se llamaba The North Hero House, una casa restaurada con su propio embarcadero y una playa privada, con 26 habitaciones (todas distintas!),  un restaurante y un porche con vistas al lago donde desayunábamos. Los encargados del hotel eran simpatiquísimos, y tenían un perro  que se llamaba Óscar. Al día siguiente de nuestra llegada celebraríamos la comida de Acción de Gracias: empezamos a comer a las 12 del mediodía... y el menú no defraudó en absoluto: un buffet de salmón, quesos, frutas, ensaladas, ... y como plato principal el pavo con los acompañamientos tradicionales de la zona: salchichas, jalapeños, patatas asadas con crema agria y cebolleta, crema de nueces, verduras a la parrilla, guisantes y cebolla con crema de leche, ...

Había diferentes tipos de pan casero y, de postre, pastel de manzana, pastel de calabaza y pastel de chocolate :) Después de comer la gente se iba traslandando al comedor que habían montado en el invernadero, alrededor del fuego. Realmente parecía que estuviéramos en una película!!! Los empleados del hotel se portaron súper bien: para cenar prepararon sándwiches fríos con lechuga, tomate y trozos de pavo asado que habían sobrado de la comida. Y al día siguiente a bajar las calorías paseando por Montreal, que está muy cerquita. Así que ya sabéis, si no tenéis plan para Acción de Gracias (y os pilla de paso claro...!) en North Hero House ya aceptan reservas para la comida a un precio fantástico (menú al final).

Back in november 2006 I was studying in Boston and wondering what to do for Thanksgiving. It had to be a short getaway since we only had 4 days off at Uni. We wanted the "real american" thing: the turkey, the atmosphere we had seen in films. In the end we chose Vermont because it was only 4 hours away by car and also beause we'd heard it was an amazing place, so beautiful. We booked a hotel and we hit the road!

We were staying at the most amazing place ever: the North Hero House in the Lake Champlain region. It was a charming bed&breakfast with white wooden walls, with panoramic vistas of the beautiful lake, with its own pier and boats. The surroundings were idyllic as well: green moutains and hills scattered with farms and villages. We loved it!

The inn offered 26 romantic rooms (all of them different), a restaurant, a porch overlooking the lake and the mountains where we had breakfast, a glass-enclosed green house warmed by a fireplace... The owners and staff were really nice, they had a dog called Oscar and everyone loved him :)

We had our Thanksgiving meal the day after we arrived. It started pretty early, at noon, and the food highly met our expectations: for starters we had deviled eggs, smoked salmon, a selection of cheeses & fruit, salads,... then there was the roast turkey with its traditional Thanksgiving "fixin's": sausage stuffings, honey-japaleno sweet potatoes, sour cream, vegetables, sweet peas in cream sauce... and a collection of freshly baked bread. For desserts we had apple pie, pumplin pie, maple cheesecake and chocolate tort. Such an unforgettable feast!

The meal lasted until 5 in the afternoon. Afterwards, guest moved to the green house to relax and digest their food. Hours later, the staff prepared some cold sandwiches with the turkey leftovers and you'll never believe it but we ate them. Next day we decided we'd better burn some calories so we went to Montereal and visited the city.

Thanksgiving is less than 2 months away, so if you haven't made up your mind yet, I strongly recommend booking at the North Hero House, they're accepting bookings now and the price is fantastic. It really was an amazing experience for all of us :)
